Like all great inventions, space shuttle origins go back to the garage

Metal garages are the mother of ingenuity. Their existence itself is a testament to creativity in the face of adversity and a response to the changing needs of humanity. Before WWII, wood was the favorite building material of contractors nationwide as the abundance of hardwood and the advent of electrical sawmilling allowed for custom manufacturing to flourish.

Necessity soon outpaced the appeal of wood, however, as the nation modernized to combat tyranny as the Second World War ushered in the steel era.  A surplus of metal following the war soon changed building and the malleable, as well as durable nature of alloys created a boon in metal buildings. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find a wooden garage in lieu of a cheaper, stronger steel garage.

Steel garages evolve to meet humanity’s grand ambitions

Continuous manned space flights would not be possible without garages!

Over the years, the uses of metal garage have been changed, as well. Initially, garages were simply detachable units for the sole purpose of car storage. In fact, the very first garages were used horse barns where animal and machine stood side-by-side for the betterment of their human owners. Combustible engines were still in their infancy, and early design defects resulted in spontaneous fires that necessitated detachable garages. Changes in engineering soon resulted in safer and more reliable vehicles, and garages began to inch closer to residences, as well as our hearts.

As the years passed, garages became more than storage domains. Man and woman alike soon found solace in tinkering with side projects in these cavernous enclaves that served as respites from the demands of the modern world. Some of humanity’s most awe-inspiring moments and epiphanies came from within a metal garage. Steve Jobs oversaw the creation of the first Apple computer from within a garage and Walt Disney likely traced the first dark lines of Mickey Mouse from similar confines. But did you know that perhaps mankind’s greatest accomplishment came from within a metal garage?

Metal buildings are the workshops of geniuses!

Maxime Faget was the Da Vinci of our time. He was the father of dozens of patents, including the design that would eventually be conceptualized as the Mercury space capsule. Every manned space flight by NASA had Max’s fingerprints guiding the brave astronauts into the abyss of the unknown. The nature of manned space flights, however, would soon change. The space race was all but won and NASA began exploring a new galaxy: the realm of reusable spacecraft to combat budget challenges.

Like all great undertaking and endeavors, Max needed a quiet and private workshop. He knew from the project’s onset that metal garage, which stood inconspicuously at the awning of his Houston home would suffice as it would attract little attention from curious onlookers and nosey newspapermen. Working clandestinely, Max soon emerged with the first three-dimensional model for the modern space shuttle. NASA immediately began development for the new shuttle and Max’s legacy lives on as the space agency now eyes its next mission: a manned trip to Mars. Our Martian ambitions would not be possible without the creative comfort of a steel metal building.
