The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster placed the world on the precipice of utter destruction and reminded humanity of the sheer power and capability of nuclear energy. To stop deadly radioactive material from seeping into the ecosystem any further, Soviet engineers assembled a giant dome-shaped structure dubbed as, “The Sarcophagus” to envelop the dangerous core material.

Unfortunately, the massive domed sarcophagus has reached the end of its intended lifespan and is now succumbing to the elements. As per its intended use, the sarcophagus was meant to act as a band-aid to quickly contain the leaking radioactive material.
In its stead, engineers have designed a revolutionary metal structure known as the “New Safe Confinement.” Instead of being a temporary solution, the new super structure is expected to last more than a century and will be able to withstand almost everything Mother Nature can throw at it, including a tornado!
